Tourism WA Invites Eco-Developers to Transform Bunuba Country into Sustainable Destinations

Tourism WA has thrown open the doors to developers, inviting them to invest in eco-accommodation projects on Bunuba Country in the West Kimberley. This initiative, in partnership with the Bunuba Dawangarri Aboriginal Corporation, seeks to transform three unique sites—Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge), Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek), and Darrambal (Lennard Gorge)—into sustainable tourism destinations. The call for Registrations of Interest marks a significant step in the state’s ongoing commitment to eco-tourism and cultural preservation.

The Kimberley region, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has long been a focal point for sustainable tourism development. This latest venture is part of Tourism WA’s $17.7 million National Park Tourism Experiences Development (NPTED) program, which aims to align tourism growth with the aspirations of Traditional Owners. The program supports new accommodation developments in some of Western Australia’s most iconic natural and cultural destinations.

In addition to the Bunuba projects, international travel company Abercrombie & Kent is set to develop a luxury eco-lodge in Purnululu National Park by 2027. This lodge, located near the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bungle Bungle Ranges, will be the company’s first signature eco-lodge in Australia. These developments reflect a broader trend towards integrating cultural and environmental sustainability into tourism offerings.

The potential economic impact of these projects is significant. By boosting tourism in the Kimberley region, they are expected to create jobs and economic opportunities for local communities, including Indigenous people. However, the environmental implications cannot be ignored. While eco-lodges are designed to minimise their ecological footprint, the influx of tourists could still pose a threat to the region’s fragile ecosystems. The WA Government’s “Plan for Our Parks” initiative aims to strike a balance between conservation and sustainable tourism, but the challenge remains.

Culturally, the partnership with Aboriginal corporations underscores a commitment to preserving and sharing Indigenous heritage. This aligns with the WA Government’s Aboriginal Tourism Action Plan 2021-2025, which seeks to ensure that tourism development benefits Indigenous communities and authentically represents their cultures.

This initiative is not without its challenges. Environmental concerns, cultural sensitivity, and logistical issues related to the remote nature of these locations could pose significant hurdles. However, the potential rewards—in terms of both economic development and cultural preservation—make this a venture worth pursuing.

For those interested in exploring the Bunuba investment opportunities further, the West Kimberley Gorge Country – Bunuba Parks Investment Prospectus provides a comprehensive overview. As the state continues to develop its tourism offerings, these projects represent a promising step towards a more sustainable and culturally inclusive future.

“Perth Welcomes the Year of the Snake: A Vibrant Celebration of Culture and Commerce”

0

The City of Perth is set to transform into a vibrant tapestry of colour and sound as it welcomes the Year of the Snake with a series of Lunar New Year celebrations. From the rhythmic pulse of lion and dragon dancers to the enticing aromas of street food markets, Perth is embracing this cultural festivity with open arms. But beyond the spectacle, these celebrations carry deeper cultural and economic implications for the city.

A Cultural Extravaganza

The Lunar New Year, a cornerstone of Asian cultural tradition, is being celebrated with gusto in Perth. The festivities kicked off at the iconic Bell Tower, marking its 25th anniversary with a medley of kung fu displays, calligraphy workshops, and live music. Elizabeth Quay is set to dazzle nightly with traditional performances, while the Perth Chinese New Year Fair at Northbridge Piazza promises a rich array of cultural experiences, thanks to the efforts of the Chung Wah Association. These events not only entertain but also serve as a bridge for cultural exchange, fostering understanding and appreciation of Asian heritage.

Economic Boost for Local Businesses

The influx of visitors during the Lunar New Year celebrations is a boon for Perth’s local economy. Street markets and events are expected to draw crowds, providing a platform for local vendors to showcase their offerings. This surge in foot traffic can lead to increased sales, particularly benefiting the hospitality and retail sectors. The economic vitality of these celebrations underscores their importance beyond mere cultural significance.

Looking Ahead

As Perth continues to grow as a cultural hub, the city’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity is evident in its support for events like the Lunar New Year. However, balancing cultural preservation with commercial interests and environmental responsibility remains a challenge. How local businesses prepare for these celebrations, and the strategies they employ to maximise benefits while maintaining cultural integrity, are questions worth exploring.

Multimillion-dollar kickstart to WA’s key decarbonisation projects

WA’s Green Revolution: A $33.6 Million Boost to Decarbonisation

In a move that could make Mother Nature grin like a Cheshire cat, Western Australia has unveiled earth-shaking news—a hefty $33.6 million in conditional grants to five innovative projects committed to decarbonising the state. Yes, your friendly neighbourhood innovators just got a financial leg-up to battle those CO2 giants, thanks to the Lower Carbon Grants Program—Gorgon Fund. Once predominantly synonymous with massive mining footprints and the iconic “big things” (you know, the Giant Ram and friends), WA is now muscling its way into the green tech olympics.

At the helm, Innovation and the Digital Economy Minister Stephen Dawson emerged with celebratory remarks, heralding a quintet of projects to receive funding. These ventures successfully outpaced over 30 vying competitors vying for a shot at pioneering WA’s sustainable future.

Among the stellar recipients, a project aimed at empowering remote WA communities with their own local power production took center stage. By elbowing out diesel generators, this initiative blossoms with a $5 million grant. Not to be outdone, a biochar behemoth in the Pilbara is set to transform 40,000 hectares of invasive mesquite weed into biochar, promising some serious carbon-capturing wizardry. This development positions itself as one of the globe’s largest biochar carbon dioxide removals to date.

The Lower Carbon Grants Program embodies the Cook Government’s commitment to innovation in decarbonisation, part of their Diversify WA: Future State vision. In plain speak, that means fewer greenhouse gases, a soundtrack of fewer car honks, and a lot more breathing space for our ozone. And who knew you could do so much with mesquite weed?

The funding pillars sprawl across diverse sectors: from hydrogen production to Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), each project is nudged to deliver solutions and climate tricks akin to taking over 400,000 gasoline-guzzlers off the road each year—an enticing prospect for us all, observing the thrust alongside Chevron Australia and its energy transition maestro, David Fallon.

So, who triumphed in this eco-crusade?

– Biomass Projects Pty Ltd bags a cool $8.6 million for Mardie Char Project – Phase 1.
– Djarindjin Aboriginal Corporation secures $5 million with their Djarindjin Community Power initiative.
– Yara Pilbara Fertilisers Pty Ltd is handed $8.6 million for the Yara Pilbara CCS Project.
– CSIRO lands $5 million for their Carbon Capture Material Acceleration Centre (CCMAC).
– Hazer Group Ltd rounds off the list with $6.1 million to foster the Hazer Process – Low Carbon Emission Hydrogen and Graphite Production.

In tandem, these projects are not just claiming chunks of cash; they’re crafting future-defining developments that dazzle brighter than any Hollywood plot twist. So stay tuned, WA, the age of local eco-heroes has dawned.

For more riveting tales and updates on this green venture, dive into the dedicated sections of the Lower Carbon Grants Program – Gorgon Fund recipients.

This is just the beginning—stay savvy and sustainable, WA. The future is unfolding, one grant at a time.

Top photo of WA’s emergency services in action is up for national award

In a world brimming with selfies and snapshots of brunch, it’s not every day you stumble upon a photograph that genuinely captures the heart of community resilience and the essence of teamwork. But that’s exactly what Nikki Woods, a volunteer with the Gingin Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, has done. Her powerful image, titled “We Work Together as One,” doesn’t just tug at the heartstrings; it yanks them with all the force of a fire truck siren, showcasing the harmony of emergency services heroically responding to a regional road crash. This captivating image has now been crowned the State winner in Western Australia for the Resilient Australia Awards and is on its way to the national stage.

The Resilient Australia Awards, celebrating their 25th year, spotlight the valiant efforts of individuals, organizations, and governments in fortifying communities against the harsh realities of natural disasters. With climate change threatening to make such events as common as flat whites in Perth cafés, it’s no wonder the stakes—and the need for such initiatives—are higher than ever. These awards don’t just applaud; they inspire and galvanize others to undertake similar endeavors.

Among the luminaries beside Nikki’s photographic triumph are other noteworthy West Aussie submissions commended for innovative resilience initiatives. Picture this: a dynamic tag team effort by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and the Department of Justice, where minimum security prisoners are drafted into the bushfire mitigation squad. It’s an initiative as clever as it is practical, and at the rate they’re going, they’ll soon be clocking up as many community service hours as glanduates.

Another heartening project lauded is the Shire of York’s cultural burning techniques reintegration on Ballardong Country. It’s a harmonious blend of tradition and modern problem-solving, affirming that sometimes, looking to the past is the way to forge a better future. Following suit is Curtin University’s pilot program aimed at supporting the mental health of young people in disaster-prone areas—a necessary venture that addresses the unseen scars that such disasters can leave behind.

Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson didn’t hold back his pride, pointing out the hard-hitting reality that Western Australia’s brush with nature’s fury hasn’t been a one-off. He, like many, acknowledges that resilience isn’t a solo gig—it’s an ensemble performance needing individuals, businesses, and governments to play their part. Dawson rightfully lauded Nikki Woods for her evocative snapshot, which encapsulates the spirit of WA’s emergency services—a true testament to their dedication and teamwork.

As Nikki Woods heads to Canberra for the national Resilient Australia Awards next month, we can’t help but feel a swelling of pride for the initiatives bubbling out of our own backyard. These aren’t just accolades; they’re beacons of hope and determination, highlighting how WA is doing its bit (and then some) to prepare for and bounce back from whatever Mother Nature decides to throw our way. So, here’s to Nikki and all those striving to shield our communities—come hell or high water. Good luck at the nationals; WA is rooting for you!

This new route is set to bolster Perth’s status as Australia’s Western Gateway while injecting a serious dose of energy into the tourism and economy of both regions.

Packed with 12 business class seats and 156 economy seats, the Airbus A321 neo will be zipping between the two cities three times a week. With no time difference to worry about, passengers can effortlessly take off from Manila at 12:05 am local time/AWST and land in Perth at 7:15 am local time/AWST. With the launch of the non-stop service, Western Australia is also looking forward to welcoming even more Filipino students, who currently represent about 7% of visitor numbers.

The Department of Home Affairs reports that Filipino arrivals to Western Australia are already bouncing back, reaching around 72% of pre-COVID levels. As the 10th largest international market for WA arrivals since the State’s border reopened, the Philippines is poised to make a significant impact on the local economy and the growing Filipino community.

Though initially planned for March 2020, the launch of this game-changing flight path was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism Minister Roger Cook couldn’t contain his excitement, saying, “The McGowan Government is proud to support this new direct flight and work with Philippine Airlines and Perth Airport as the airline launches its first new international destination since the pandemic.”

Minister Cook also underscored the importance of this new connection for attracting visitors and international students to Western Australia while fostering trade between the two regions. He warmly welcomed everyone arriving on the inaugural flight from Manila and urged them to dive headfirst into the vibrant tourist attractions awaiting them in Perth and beyond.

Western Australia Passes Major Local Government Reforms with Legislative Assembly Bill 2023

0

It’s official – the Western Australian Legislative Assembly has finally passed the Local Government Amendment Bill 2023, which will introduce a range of major reforms to the state’s local government sector.

The Bill is the culmination of 25 years of inquiries, reports and reviews into the sector, and will bring with it tangible benefits for ratepayers, as well as increased transparency and accountability.

The changes include introducing optional preferential voting, public elections of mayors or presidents for larger councils, abolishing the use of wards for smaller councils, and aligning the size of councils with population size.

The Bill also introduces new requirements for the publication of performance indicators and results for all local government Chief Executive Officers, as well as mandated communications agreements between council members and the local government administration.

Local Government Minister John Carey was understandably pleased with the Legislative Assembly’s decision.

“Our reform agenda is clear – we are strengthening the transparency, accountability and efficiency of local governments, and this set of electoral reforms will enable stronger local democracy and community engagement,” Minister Carey said.

“Now is the time for action and real change across local government.”

The reforms are set to be implemented in time for the October 2023 Ordinary Elections, so it looks like local governments across the state will soon be getting a much-needed overhaul.

Experience Sustainable Mobility in Perth. Take an E-Scooter Ride!

0

Move over cars, it’s time for e-scooters to take to the streets of Perth!

The City of Perth has announced a two-year trial of e-scooters, allowing members of the public to hire them from more than 80 sites across the City.

Mayor Basil Zempilas said the scheme is a sustainability-focused move, allowing visitors, residents, and workers to choose a more environmentally-friendly form of transport.

Two providers have been selected for the trial – Bird and Neuron Mobility (Australia) – and the companies have agreed to fit their e-scooters with geofencing technology, ensuring the devices remain within the City of Perth local government area.

The trial will also have an additional safety feature, forcing riders to return their e-scooters to designated parking spots, reducing the chances of them blocking pedestrian pathways.

Riders are encouraged to download the provider’s app and plan their journey before they ride off, so they can park responsibly at the end of their trip.

The speed limit for e-scooters in WA is 25 km/h and within the City, e-scooters will be able to travel at up to 25 km/h on roads and 10 km/h on footpaths. However, they won’t be permitted on roads with a centre line or median strip, or roads where the speed limit for vehicles exceeds 50 km/h.

E-scooters will be available for hire from Saturday 18 March, with users having to be over the age of 16. There is a full list of rules available on the City of Perth website.

It’s an exciting time for the City of Perth, and a great opportunity to try out a fun, sustainable form of transport. So grab your helmet and get ready to ride!

Experience Unforgettable History at His Majesty’s Theatre: $15 Million Balcony Restoration Project Unveiled

Get ready to step back in time and witness a stunning piece of history come to life as His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth unveils its $15 million balcony restoration project!

After more than 70 years, the magnificent wrap-around balconies that once graced the original façade of this Edwardian-era theatre are back, and they’re more than double the usable space on the upper levels!

The restoration project also includes a new Upper Circle bar and function area, a fresh coat of paint on the façade, and the installation of upgraded lighting and LED screens.

His Majesty’s Theatre is one of the few remaining Edwardian theatres in the Southern Hemisphere and was built back in 1902. Unfortunately, in 1953, the original balconies were removed due to concerns of potential vehicle crashes. But now, after 70 years, they have been reconstructed to provide patrons with a unique and unforgettable experience.

The new balconies were designed to be an exact replica of the original, with staff even scouring local scrap yards to find elements of the original balcony spiral stairs. They’re constructed with more than 400 square metres of stunning jarrah decking and 4.4 kilometres of gorgeous jarrah battens. The uprights and decorative elements were crafted with glass-fibre reinforced concrete.

The balconies were constructed in 14 separate modules and brought to the site, where a massive 300-tonne crane lifted them into place.

This impressive restoration project is just the latest in a series of upgrades that have been undertaken at His Majesty’s Theatre since 2018, including a state-of-the-art orchestra pit lift, bigger and more accessible box office, and a new entrance at the corner of King and Hay Streets.

Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman couldn’t contain his excitement, stating, “I am thrilled our beloved His Majesty’s Theatre has been restored to its former glory for the enjoyment of all Western Australians! The elegant balconies that wrap around the grand façade will significantly enhance the visitor experience, and more than double the amount of upstairs public space. His Majesty’s Theatre is a place where opera is sung in First Nation’s language, and culture and the performing arts can be enjoyed by all.”

Perth MLA John Carey also expressed his delight at the project, saying, “This is a stunning refurbishment of a much-loved heritage building. The reinstatement of the balconies will help further activate this part of the city and create increased foot traffic and visitation.”

So, whether you’re a culture vulture or just looking for a unique and unforgettable experience, His Majesty’s Theatre is the perfect place to explore the shared cultural heritage of Western Australia!
