Experience Unforgettable History at His Majesty’s Theatre: $15 Million Balcony Restoration Project Unveiled

Get ready to step back in time and witness a stunning piece of history come to life as His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth unveils its $15 million balcony restoration project!

After more than 70 years, the magnificent wrap-around balconies that once graced the original façade of this Edwardian-era theatre are back, and they’re more than double the usable space on the upper levels!

The restoration project also includes a new Upper Circle bar and function area, a fresh coat of paint on the façade, and the installation of upgraded lighting and LED screens.

His Majesty’s Theatre is one of the few remaining Edwardian theatres in the Southern Hemisphere and was built back in 1902. Unfortunately, in 1953, the original balconies were removed due to concerns of potential vehicle crashes. But now, after 70 years, they have been reconstructed to provide patrons with a unique and unforgettable experience.

The new balconies were designed to be an exact replica of the original, with staff even scouring local scrap yards to find elements of the original balcony spiral stairs. They’re constructed with more than 400 square metres of stunning jarrah decking and 4.4 kilometres of gorgeous jarrah battens. The uprights and decorative elements were crafted with glass-fibre reinforced concrete.

The balconies were constructed in 14 separate modules and brought to the site, where a massive 300-tonne crane lifted them into place.

This impressive restoration project is just the latest in a series of upgrades that have been undertaken at His Majesty’s Theatre since 2018, including a state-of-the-art orchestra pit lift, bigger and more accessible box office, and a new entrance at the corner of King and Hay Streets.

Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman couldn’t contain his excitement, stating, “I am thrilled our beloved His Majesty’s Theatre has been restored to its former glory for the enjoyment of all Western Australians! The elegant balconies that wrap around the grand façade will significantly enhance the visitor experience, and more than double the amount of upstairs public space. His Majesty’s Theatre is a place where opera is sung in First Nation’s language, and culture and the performing arts can be enjoyed by all.”

Perth MLA John Carey also expressed his delight at the project, saying, “This is a stunning refurbishment of a much-loved heritage building. The reinstatement of the balconies will help further activate this part of the city and create increased foot traffic and visitation.”

So, whether you’re a culture vulture or just looking for a unique and unforgettable experience, His Majesty’s Theatre is the perfect place to explore the shared cultural heritage of Western Australia!
